Inger Rokkjær

Inger Rokkjær, 1934-2008, studied at the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in Århus, Denmark, from 1965 to 1970, where one of her tutors was Gutte Eriksen. She set up her own workshop in 1969, and later returned to the Academy to teach from 1982 until 1986. Rokkjaer is known for her mastery of the raku technique, combining Danish and Japanese ceramic traditions. She as one fo the first Danish potters to explore the use of the raku firing technique, and describes it as "a cultural encounter - a confrontation between the simple Jutlandish [earhtenware pottery] and the refined Japenese". Rokkjaer's pieces reflect a blend of modern design with traditional techniques, showcasing her unique artistic vision and craftsmanship. She favoured in particular ‘The mystery’ of the lidded jar, sometimes with carved or faceted decoration with rich, earthy colours.

A Danish artist celebrated for her innovative approach to ceramics, particularly raku. Inger Rokkjaer's works are highly sought after and can be found in major collections in the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, USA and in Japan.
