Hans Vangso
Hans Vangsø studied at the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in Denmark from 1972 to 1976, where he was taught by Gutte Eriksen. They remained close friends and he continued assisting her in making and firing her works into her 80's. In 2004 she wrote of her great admiration for his work. Hans combines a great simplicity in form, texture and glaze. The total melting of glaze and body, render Hans Vangsø's works unique. The surface of the glaze is obtained in the firing methods, developed over many years, each piece being fired several times in a homemade gas kiln, wrapped in paper-saggars with salt, seaweed, metals at 1300 degrees C. At first glance his works show an immediate Japanese influence, in form and glaze. However taking a closer look, one senses the strong and deep underlying personal feel of the North. A rich and balanced tradition of colour and tone, inspired by Nordic nature and the natural minimalism of Danish culture.
Hans Vangsø lives and works in Knebel, near Århus, Denmark, an area renowned for its strong ceramic traditions. He has exhibited widely in Denmark, Europe, USA and Japan, and in 2002 was one of the artists selected for the major touring exhibition From the Kilns of Denmark which travelled to New York, Berlin and Paris.
