Mary Rogers
Born in Belper, Derbyshire, Mary Rogers studied graphic design at Watford School (1945-47), calligraphy at St. Martin's School of Art in London (1947-49) and ceramics at the Loughborough School of Art (1960-64). She worked for several years as a calligrapher and graphic designer before establishing her own workshop in Loughborough. Initially she made chunky coiled stoneware pots resembling carved stones. By the 1970s she became excited by curling and crumpled forms and thought porcelain would be best suited to make these shapes and concentrated on small porcelain pinched bowls. She wrote "Mary Rogers on Pottery and Porcelain" in 1979. Her work is inspired by nature as she has kept natural history collections since her childhood. She moved her studio to Cornwall and retired from making in the early 1990s, having produced a body of ceramics which has been admired and collected by museums and collectors alike.
Her work is held in numerous private and public collections, including: Crafts Council, London. The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Boymans Van Beuningen Stichting Museum, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Keramion Frechen, Frechen, Germany. Musée du Cinquantenaire, Brussels, Belgium. Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Lausanne, Switzerland. Vestlandske Kundindustrimuseum, Bergen, Norway. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. The Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA. The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, USA. Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania, USA. Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Montreal, Canada. National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne City Art Gallery, Australia.
