Walter Keeler

Walter Keeler is a British studio potter specialising in salt glaze pottery. A potter of international reputation, Walter Keeler has done much to reinvent the language of British functional ceramics over the past thirty years, and has been hugely influential, both as maker and teacher. Named ‘Welsh Artist of the Year’ in 2007. Writer Oliver Watson described him as 'one of the most important and influential potters of the 1980s'. Keeler's work is held in a number of public collections including Victoria & Albert Museum London, National Museum Wales, American Craft Museum New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA and the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Walter trained at the Harrow School of Art, studying under Victor Margrie and Michael Casson, and later returned there to teach. He was professor of Ceramics at the University of the West of England from 1994 to 2002. Currently he is president of South Wales Potters. His bold and imaginative pieces have been heavily influenced by early Staffordshire Creamware, while taking their own unique formations. Walter believes his work grows from his passion for ‘pots from the past’ and the joy of making and firing itself. Sometimes making simple, useful, things like mugs or jugs, while on other occasions creating pieces that are a lot less straightforward.
